What to Expect
Preparing for Your Exam
MRI Contraindications
MRI exams cannot be performed if certain implanted devices are present, including: Pacemakers, Brain aneurysm clips, or Battery-operated pumps (insulin, pain medication, etc.)
Before your Appointment
- Remove all jewelry and metallic accessories
- Wear comfortable clothing without metal buttons or zippers
- Avoid mascara on the day of your exam
Abdominal MRI Only
Fast for 3-4 hours prior to the exam
During Your Exam
You may be asked to change into a gown and remove personal items such as jewelry or watches. During the exam, you’ll lie on a cushioned, adjustable table and be positioned comfortably using supports as needed.
For optimal image quality, remaining still is important. You’ll hear soft tapping or knocking sounds as images are captured. A technologist is available throughout the exam and can communicate with you at any time via intercom. Most exams take approximately 15 minutes, and normal activities may be resumed immediately afterward.
